That seems like a whole lot of work for a misguided problem. If your entire goal is to enhance general sound output there are a variety of options. E.g. pulseaudio has an equalizer module one could use and/or LADSPA plugins you could hook in between. But it's hard to give recommendations based on the info we have. Can you post

amixer -c0 #Or rather, the card you intend to have audio from
#If using pulse
pulseaudio --dump-conf
pacmd list-cards

Re: "Message" is a required field in this form.

A few things here, you might be able to activate more speakers by switching from stereo to one of the 4.0 outputs with e.g.

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1b.0 output:analog-surround-40+input:analog-stereo

. As for qpaeq, did you check if it doesn't create a additional sink you have to switch your applications to? Another potentially more powerful option would be pulseeffects: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/pulseeffects/

That points to session set up errors. How do you login, how do you start X? Note the second blue box at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc

What's the output of

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

Re: "Message" is a required field in this form.

Equalization will not magically improve sound quality, it might mask the problem though.

From my experience so far I've found that at best laptop sound cards have passable quality. Usually the problem is a high noise floor, which is fine if you use the built-in speakers or maybe if you use high impedance headphones.

If improving the sound quality is what you are after, then get a good usb dac / sound card, if you get a good one you'll be surprised with the difference.

Re: "Message" is a required field in this form.

Fair enough, but you would need to know exactly what the dolby software does. If it fiddles with settings at the hardware level then maybe your only option is pci passthrough, but that will leave your host system without audio.

If the changes are merely different equalization settings then you should be able to reproduce that on linux. I would be more inclined to say the perceived quality improvement is due to different equalization settings or some extra audio processing done by the dolby software and not something at a lower level but who knows.

Re: "Message" is a required field in this form.

Strange session wise this looks like an alright setup. What do you get for

loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID

But FWIW I did test them now and qpaeq seems pretty limited. Pulseeffects on the other hand allows to adjust nearly every knob imaginable, so you are likely to be able to get some good setup going with it.
