Checking squid config file returns failed to open /run/squid.pid

Installed squid and added the config according to the wiki and ran

sudo squid -k check

It throws the following exception

2018/08/29 15:23:32| FATAL: failed to open /run/squid.pid: (2) No such file or directory
    exception location: File.cc(190) open

Don't exactly know what File.cc . Tried running

lsof | grep "File.cc"

and

lsof | grep "File.cc(190)"

Both the commands return nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
