[SOLVED] ALSA configuration for when multiple applications are opened

Hello,

I'm unsure of the internals of ALSA and put together a ~/.asoundrc which works but for only the first application.

The first application will play (vlc or chromium) but when I run speaker test an error occurs.

speaker-test -D default -c 2 -t wav

speaker-test 1.1.6

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy

I understand that I need to use dmix and from what I understand dmix should be listed in the result of aplay -L.

Can someone help me configure ALSA to allow multiple applications to output sound at the same time?

Your default device doesn't exist anymore, what you defined is equivalent to the hdmi PCM in aplay -L which equates to direct hardware access which leads to the behaviour you observe.

See the red warning at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … ive_method for your chosen method.

Replace your current .asoundrc with 

defaults.pcm.device 3;

  instead.
