[SOLVED] bad font rendering in GNOME on Wayland

i've tried many things from the wiki sections and from searching the forum and the web. unfortunately most of the documentation refers to Xorg and all the rest didn't work.
my problem is that tex is very blurry everywhere and even if my screen is not the best around i'm sure this is not how fonts should look.
any configuration tried for fontconfig doesn't seem to have any effect (don't know if i'm missing something) and from gnome-tweaks i've tried setting hinting to "none" and anti-aliasing to "greyscale" but still text looks out of focus.
disabling anti-aliasing gives me a better definition but fonts are badly distorted and almost unreadable. enabling hinting makes fonts bigger and strange and still blurry.

i have started looking for dpi settings but didn't find them, i tried to edit scaling_factor for dconf but that doesn't improve my situation (bigger fonts look better but they have still a blur around them.
don't know what else i can try.

any help is appreciated, don't know what relevant info i can give, i'll be happy to provide any if needed and i'll also post a screenshot hoping it will be visible.

let me know if you can see what i'm talking about. in blue and grey text the blur is more visible and if you look at the underscore it seems out of focus compared to the text.

Do you mean that you don't have this issue on Xorg, or that you only tested with wayland?

To me, the blurrines doesn't seem limited to text. It's quite obvious e.g. on the top panel icons.
Have you enabled fractional scaling via the gsettings?

no actually in Xorg session it is exactly the same. I tried fractional scaling too, nothing happened. by the way, by default dpi are set to 96, how can i check if it's the correct value? can wrong dpi be the cause?

Never mind the above. I didn't realize the image was upscaled on the browser window, which made everything seem blurry.
Frankly, I'm not sure what you mean by blurry fonts either. Can you provide screenshot where the font rendering looks the way you want?

Have you tried enabling subpixel rendering with different pixel aligment settings, or switching the lcdfilter setting? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … figuration

finally, i did it.

dpi didn't change much and made icons worse.
instead i just restored fontconfig configuration and re-enabled hinting and the issue is gone, the text look normal in size and not blurried. this is how it looks now, don't know if you see it.

Could you please tell us what exactly you did when you "restored fontconfig configuration and re-enabled hinting"?

Since today's fontconfig-upgrade [fontconfig (1:2.13.0+15+gc60ed9e-1 -> 1:2.13.1-1)], I also have blurry fonts in some applications where the rendering has been very sharp until yesterday.

i removed every file inside /etc/fonts/config.d, then just reinstalled fontconfig and changed hinting settings to default (slight) from gnome-twaks

Ah, thanks.

But in the meantime the latest fontconfig update from today (1:2.13.1-1 -> 2:2.13.0+15+gc60ed9e-1) brought the cure. My fonts are sharp again.
