ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

Hi. I purchased an ATI Radeon HD 6450 graphic card. Now I've seen that catalyst driver isn't supported anymore and therefore I had to use the free radeon driver. Everythings is working, except that the PC crashes multiple times a day.

I couldn't see anything in the logs. The PC just goes down.

There are several situations where a crash happened. While watching Youtubevideos, VLC Videos and while installing Arch as a guest OS in virtualbox (within the step of installing the files it crashes everytime).

uname -a
Linux crypt 4.18.5-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Aug 24 12:48:58 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I did not found any errors / kernel panics in the log files.

Do you think this problem gets solved if I downgrade Xserver and switch to catalyst?

Re: ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

There's too little information to go by to determine whether a switch to an old xorg release and catalyst is a fix, in fact there is currently no hard evidence that the graphics card is at fault.

What are the rest of your specs?

Post a

journalctl -b

from a faulty boot (use -b-1 to get the log from a previous boot if you can't get one anymore due to a crash/freeze)  check if you get core dumps are you running on Wayland or Xorg? Post a xorg log, see if switching the xorg ddx (i.e. removing xf86-video-ati and running xorg without it) fixes this

Ok. It keeps crashing even if I remove the HD6450...

journalctl -b (with HD6450 installed)

Re: ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

PS: I don't use compiz anymore. Openbox+Compton is what it is now.

These are the video related packages installed:

xf86-video-amdgpu
xf86-video-ati
xf86-video-vesa
lib32-libva
lib32-libvdpau
lib32-libxinerama
lib32-llvm
lib32-mesa
lib32-mesa-vdpau

Re: ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

Please post output like that in a single post, if you can't do it in one go, you may edit a previous post if no one has answered in between.

That journal log is truncated, redirect into a file or use --no-pager for the full output.

Re: ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

You can try the modesetting driver (which has comparable performance to radeon) but I doubt in will make any difference since the kernel module is the same. The radeon driver is maintained and normally more stable than catalyst. I doubt very much installing catalyst will help but who know. Could it be a faulty video card? I would think this is the most probable cause but it's impossible to say for sure. Have you had the opportunity to try another OS (for example Windows?). Does the card not overheat? (Use the lm-sensors package.) I use the radeon driver with a 6570 video card and that work perfectly.

Re: ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

It does look more like CPU to me, if you can or have that available, you might try and get yourself a BIOS/UEFI update.

Re: ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

It looks like hardware failure of some sort. The fact that it happens when playing video let think about the video card. I don't believe a firmware upgrade will help. Firmwares aren't buggy to the point of doing that.

Re: ATI Radeon HD 6450 leads to crashes.

That's an overly optimistic statement, I remember similar backtraces when Skylake was new and there where issues with TSX. Then fixed by either a not yet publicly available microcode update or a relevant microcode containing UEFI update. I'm thinking something similar along those lines, though seeing as this is quite oldish hardware i'd definitely also not rule out hardware issue.
