LIRC Not working [SOLVED]

Hi all --

Freshly installed Arch.  Installed lirc.

Added the appropriate setserial, etc., to allows lirc_serial to load to /dev/ttyS0.

When I try to run irw to test it, I get:
Aug 13 06:16:27 tv lircd: lircd(all) ready
Aug 13 06:17:25 tv lircd: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
Aug 13 06:17:25 tv lircd: uirt2_raw: could not reset tty
Aug 13 06:17:25 tv lircd: caught signal

This config was working just fine on the same computer under Debian so I know the hardware etc., is working ok.

Kernel is 2.6.17

lircd version is 0.8.1-CVS, which was loaded using pacman.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?  Should I use a different version of lirc?  Not sure myself...

Update:  in the lircd command line, the doc neglects to point out that the uirt2_raw needs -d /dev/ttyS0 and not /dev/lirc0.
