[SOLVED] Broken virtualbox.. kwin_x11 (BadWindow)

Kernel: 4.14.70-1-lts
DE: KDE Plasma 5.13.5

I recently noticed that anytime I try to launch virtualbox it immediately crashes and becomes unresponsive (have to force close). Also the little penguin logo in the window seems to glitch out and appears to almost vibrate from side to side by about 10-20 pixels.

The title bar, along with everything inside of virtualbox, is completely unresponsive, and if left unchecked will eventually be recognized as a misbehaving app and a kwin dialog will offer to kill the application.

Started virtualbox and then manually killed it

$ journalctl -x -S "<right before I lauched virtualbox>"

EDIT:
I had been trying to figure out what was going on with this error for about a week, but when I went to launch virtualbox again to show the difference in when I manually kill it vs when kwin steps in and does it (to have some halfway decent logs to share with the forum) something entirely different happened. I was just trying to recreate what I had already done many times already, but for some reason this time when I started virtualbox and DIDN'T force kill it, it seems to have somehow "fixed itself".

This was the first time that a segmentation fault showed in the logs fwiw.. and I'm hard pressed to come up with a hypothesis on why the CPU cores got throttled and then set back to a normal clock speed all within the same second...

virtualbox "fixing itself" literally happened as I was typing this, so I figured I might as well go ahead and post just in case this error shows itself again.

For clarity's sake, I did remove two kwin rules that I had for size and position of the window. Not sure if this may be related or not.

Will mark as [SOLVED] upon further testing...

Re: [SOLVED] Broken virtualbox.. kwin_x11 (BadWindow)

So now I was getting errors saying that the virtualbox kernel driver was not loaded (vboxdrv) and to run `/sbin/vboxconfig` as root, which doesn't exist. The error dialog also mentioned "Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)", and that there was a permission error with `/dev/vboxdrv`, which also doesn't exist.

Although, `/sbin/rcvboxdrv` exists and appears to be sim-linked to `/sbin/vboxreload`

This script unloads and reloads the necessary kernel modules for `virtualbox`. Which on my box were `vboxnetadp vboxnetflt vboxpci vboxdrv`.

TL;DR
I ran `/sbin/rcvboxdrv` or `/sbin/vboxreload` and everything seems to work now.

I'm still not sure what was going on with kwin and the 'bad window'.
