[SOLVED] Emacs Org-mode: Spacing style for paragraphs

Emacs Org-mode comes with a very handy folding functionality. However, recently I have encountered a problem that relates to the way that Org-mode sometimes removes the spacing between paragraphs when I fold and then unfold part of my items. For example, I would start off with a tree like

* Item 1
** Item 1.1
** Item 1.2

* Item 2
** Item 2.1

which could sometimes unfold into

* Item 1
* Item 2

when I would have preferred

* Item 1

* Item 2

with an extra line-break between the paragraphs. The idea is to organize the root-level items into meaningful groups according to their use, like in the following example.

* Elephants
* Tigers

* Salmons
* Carps
* Tuna

How can I get the sort of grouping that I'm after?

After some more browsing on this, I found that an earlier post on the issue exists here:

However, I would like to add a small caveat to supplement this earlier post. In Evil mode, the usual way to collapse a tree is to type zc in the normal mode. This key combination apparently invokes a different command from the native folding command of the Org mode. Therefore blindly using zc to fold, like I did, will make it look like the setting

(setq org-cycle-separator-lines -2)

is ignored. The setting works fine with the native folding, only the Evil mode command does not abide by it by default.
