Hello, first post. Have searched a lot but not found a solution for this, so hope it's not a dupe.
I am using xorg, lightdm and i3wm on a thinkbook x1 extreme.
Arch will work perfectly fine with the internal display without me having to configure it. I used nvidia-xconfig to make the xorg conf files, which also worked fine. But now the internal display doesn't work - whether I boot with an external monitor plugged in or not. But booting with it plugged in seems to work perfectly fine for monitors of different resolutions, etc.
I tried to add an xorg config for my laptop screen, but I can't get X to start successfully with it (even when I remove the nvidia generated configs).
Output of
lspci | grep VGAis:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 3e9b
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile] (rev a1)And the verbose output of lspci for those devices is:

What am I missing here? This is the first time I've set up arch, but basically everything else has either been a breeze to set up or I've been able to make steady progress on it, but I'm so lost at this part
Thanks!

Welcome to the arch linux forums. Please post the system's Xorg.log and the output of dmesg.

The system has hybrid graphics and needs to be configured for NVIDIA_Optimus or Bumblebee.
Offline
Awesome, thanks for the lead!
I installed bumblebee - after rebooting I couldn't get X to start, but checking the logs it was failing to find vesa and fbdev; I installed xf86-video-fbdev and that got X to start.
I still can't do much with the xorg conf making screens/monitors/devices, but I figured out that bumblebee wasn't going to work with the nvidia-xconfig generated conf so that fixed my issue of trying to combine that with my own configuration.
I can't get anything to show up on my external display now, but xrandr now shows me this:
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 340mm x 190mm
1920x1080 60.03 + 59.93 47.99

I checked the XOrg logs after booting and it looked like bbswitch was detecting and starting to manage both video cards just fine, so that's positive
Still, nothing will show up on an external monitor either when I plug it in, or boot with it plugged in.
The arch wiki about bumblebee gives an example configuration for a setup which look the same as mine, so I guess I will need something similar to get it to run:

I tried removing one of the intel gpus, then tried removing the nvidia and second monitor and screen as well, no luck. I'm not sure which gpu will drive which display (or if both will be able to drive both), and I'm still pretty foggy about how much of that I need to specify in the conf.
Sorry for the late reply, I was up pretty late last night working on this and had a full workload

You are using bbswitch but not bumblebee? For the external display it could be Bumblebee#Output_wired_to_the_NVIDIA_chip
Offline
Found a mistake: I changed the busIDs from PCI:00:02.0 to PCI:00:02:0 and X now starts up when I boot.
I still can't get more than one screen to appear though -- I used Xorg --conf to generate some configuration and grabbed a ServerLayout section from it (minus the input devices which otherwise work fine):
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
Screen 1 "Screen1" Above "Screen0"
EndSectionbut that didn't do anything
Anyway, it's almost 3am and I have work in the morning! Hope somebody can make heads or tails of this
Thanks!

It's likely that one of your outputs is wired to the nvidia chip, in which case you should follow: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bu … VIDIA_chip
Offline
I run intel-virtual-output and get the error `No VIRTUAL outputs on ":0"`, and there's not other screens available.
It seems that after fixing pci bus IDs the virtual option on screen 0 has disappeared
The "No layout section. Using the first screen section" is concerning me - other examples of xorg.conf I've seen don't specify a layout and just list the screens

Playing around with the conf some more, I got X to read my serverlayout and load both screen sections:

...and bbswitch is still doing its normal thing (pastebin of dmesg output) detecting and managing the display devices, but something fishy is happening and tainting the kernel:
...
[ 2.272033] bbswitch: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
[ 2.272053] bbswitch: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel
...I'm not sure if this is causing the problem or not, but although X is now reading both screen sections, xrandr still only shows one screen and one provider:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192

...
$ xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x43 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 1 associated providers: 0 name:IntelSo some progress, still no virtual output on screen 0 though and no visible evidence of another output device once X is started up. I used the Xorg --configure and a variety of examples from the arch wiki to put together the new conf, and I'm pretty pleased that it's not causing problems anymore but I'm pretty much out of avenues to pursue to work out what's happening between detecting/loading the devices and actually using them.
I've tried turning discrete graphics on and off with bumblebee with no apparent change
Are there any other tools or logs I should be looking at to gain some more information about what's happening?

Remove (or backup or whatever, ensure it isn't loaded and interfering with default detection) the xorg.conf . Then follow the section I linked.

Alright, I've done that and made the recommended changes to /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia and rebooted
running intel-virtual-output now succeeds and seems to do something -- the screen flickers and my connected monitor seems to disconnect and reconnect (briefly goes into power saving mode), although it's still blank.
xrandr now gives me this output:

What happens for
xrandr --output VIRTUAL3 --mode 800x600?
Offline
It worked!
I had to use --auto to get a decent resolution (although it's not the right one for the display), and an --above argument to get it not to mirror, but those are separate things.
Thanks for the massive amount of help everyone! Much appreciated!
