No sr_mod [solved]

Hi, I've installed Archlinux on a box with no optical disk drive - it's been over a year and I never use it. I just plugged in a usb optical drive however, and while the drive spins, Arch isn't recognizing it. With further investigation, I have no sr_mod. Any ideas how I add this? Has this module been removed from the kernel by default?

I've added my user to the optical group, however seems without this module it's not working. Have I missed something? Very stumped here... just trying to read music from my usb optical drive. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Thanks!

Re: No sr_mod [solved]

Have you rebooted since the last kernel upgrade?  In other words, do `pacman -Q linux` and `uname -a` give the same kernel version number?

Re: No sr_mod [solved]

I almost never reboot...

Output is:
pacman -Q linux
linux 4.18.7.arch1-1

&
uname -a
Linux curious-desktop 4.18.6-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Sep 5 11:54:09 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is rebooting essential?

Re: No sr_mod [solved]

Yep.
Note that the kernel (and modules) that are installed are newer than the kernel you are running.  The old kernel can no longer find it modules and it cannot load them (they are gone, including sr_mod)

Re: No sr_mod [solved]

Awesome - a reboot solved it. Was then able to load the module, and access my usb cd drive. Thanks!
