Arch with multiple DE and users

So, within the next few days, my new computer parts will arrive and I'm naturally installing Arch on that baby beast. This will naturally include a lightdm and Xfce/i3 setup with accounts for both myself as well as my wife, who's had little to none experience with linux what so ever. My thoughts are to be able to connect our usernames to a preferred desktop, i3 for me and xfce for her, that will automate when logged in. Now specifying this in a search provide did leave me more or less clueless tbh. Is there any superb ideas on a workaround on the subject?

Re: Arch with multiple DE and users

In lightdm when the username is selected,  is the session from the last successful login of that user not automatically selected as well?

This may be true, yet I am hoping for lightdm to automatically select DE for the two users at the system deepending on presets for the user loging in

Re: Arch with multiple DE and users

You could set the desktop choice in each users .xinitrc. I don't have experience with lightdm to know how well it works getting started from there, but the wiki does link to this explanation https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … _a_session

From what i understood you want the users to be assigned to specific environments. If that's the case why don't you use simple xinit? You can set your local user configs so that startx will act the way you want for different users (so when you execute it, i3 will run and when the other user executes it xfce). But i think lightdm will also remember the default desktop. Wait and test it then get worried.

EDIT: wow! concurrency happened. somebody delete my post:D

It should be noted that i always worry ahead so that I have ideas when/if trouble shows up.

Re: Arch with multiple DE and users

I'm confused here, this is precisely what a tool like lightdm is for.  There is nothing out of the ordinary or in any way unique in your goals.  Just configure lightdm according to the documentation.

And I'm not arguing about your statement, but I did experience issues with it when I tried it a while back. May have just been a minor bug back then, but I like to play it safe smile

Re: Arch with multiple DE and users

Then post here when you have issues.  There is no problem here, so this thread serves no purpose.
