[SOLVED] Screen Tearing and flickering

Using Intel Corporation Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics 520].
I'm experiencing this problem since day one of arch installation (NO DUAL BOOT). I installed compton, it didn't work. I even removed xf86-video-intel which made no change. I use both KDE Plasma and i3 as well with display server Xorg and display manager sddm. Can this be fixed by altering configs or should I just switch back to windows? Help.

needs more details/better scoped, what exactly are you running NOW? Post a xorg.log and

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin org.kde.KWin.supportInformation #If on KDE

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Tearing and flickering

im running the git drivers from the AUR for all my machines both intel and ati, had tearing issues with xf86-video-intel and crashing/stability issues with xf86-video-ati, now using xf86-video-ati-git and xf86-video-intel-git and all my machines seem to be fine.... for now

EDIT: sorry forgot to mention to make sure you have the:

Option "TearFree" "true"

in your xorg.conf.d 20-intel.conf file

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … free_video

Installed xf86-video-intel-git and created the 20-intel.conf as asked. Now, the flickering is not completely gone but less obvious (tearing persists, a lot), but that is still disturbing as I use the computer to watch videos very frequently. What do I do ?

Compositing
===========
Compositing is not active

Well yes... Go to

kcmshell5 kwincompositing

and enable the compositor. (And FWIW if that works properly the modesetting driver is known to have less issues than xf86-video-intel on KDE, if you notice any graphics issues beyond the screen tearing try to remove it and that config file.

Did that. Tried with and without xf86-video-intel-git, still no luck. What it did is just added animation effects to windows opening/closing. Any other methods ?

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Tearing and flickering

Which tearing prevention/ GL version did you set? Repost the output of that command after enabling compositing.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Tearing and flickering

In general it seems your system is quite dated, many things have much newer versions available. You will want to run a system update. Also where do you see the tearing? Is video/firefox/youtube the only obvious spot left? Have you seen https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fi … creen_mode ?

Yes, I see tearing in firefox, scrolling and youtube, and VLC too. You suggest system update or particular packages ?

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Tearing and flickering

from the log linked in #9 :

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 (Skylake GT2)

Are you using xf86-video-intel ?

If so, try removing it.
If not, try adding it.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Installed and set tearfree as  true, still no luck.

For clarification, @Lone_Wolf see comment #4

@he15en6erg, please post the output of "xrandr -q", the DDC gathered modelines look odd.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Tearing and flickering

Did you add the 1366x768 mode by hand?
Tried the 40Hz variant?
The 60Hz are only even remotely matching the ddc modes for reduced blanking.

=> Output of "xrandr -q --verbose"? (sorry, should have asked before)

I'm sorry I don't understand this. How do I do it ?

Re: [SOLVED] Screen Tearing and flickering

xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1366x768 --rate 40

The xrandr modelines are the ddc gathered ones.

Woah ! IT WORKED !! Thanks a lot. Saved me a lot of pain. Can you please explain what was wrong; and can I acheive better refresh rate or perhaps something like that for better video quality ?
