[Solved]Unable to boot from USB3 after update (linux-hardened)

Hi all,

After updating linux-hardened-4.18.10.a-1 > linux-hardened-4.18.11.a-1.

My device is an Upboard (upboard.org) and has USB3 which I have used to boot of until this update.

In the emergency shell I have investigated '/dev/disk/partuuid', but the whole disk is gone.

Default linux linux 4.18.10.arch1-1 but also mainline and LTS are all booting fine, so maybe something in the config?

Need more info, I'm happy to supply.

Thanks, qinohe

Re: [Solved]Unable to boot from USB3 after update (linux-hardened)

In linux-hardened-4.18.11.a-1 they changed USB modules to be built-in, see https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … 424fcbed47 . If you are trying to load those modules in initramfs it will fail. I don't know if this change was intentional. You may report this in https://bugs.archlinux.org .

Thank you Everette88 and loqs, that answered my question.

So it's very possible there will be a patch for this because more people will be affected.

I will add my notes and a redirect to this thread to that bug report.

Thanks, qinohe

Re: [Solved]Unable to boot from USB3 after update (linux-hardened)

I  have also run into this problem. I have Arch on a usb stick that wouldn't boot after the last kernel upgrade.

I'm hoping that everyone with this problem has read the work around contained in the bug report discussion. If not, I applied the work around as follows:  add  ( usb_storage ) to the modules line in                       ( mkinitcpio.conf ), then run  (  mkinitcpio -p linux )  to  regenerate initrd images. My Arch on usb now boots fine. I am booting directly from EFISTUB, if that matters. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks, for the update @falconindy and thanks for helping with the patch @Ferdi265,
I must have done something wrong during patch 'by hand' because mkinitcpio 24-3 testing works, thanks all wink
