[SOLVED] XPS 13 9360 8th Gen (QCA6174) Firmware crashes

Hi,

I have an XPS 13 9360 (8th Gen model) that sports a Killer Wireless-AC 1535 (QCA6174).

I continually get WiFi dropouts, dmesg reports that the firmware is crashing:

[ 8741.903607] ath10k_pci 0000:3a:00.0: device successfully recovered

It claims that the device was successfully recovered, however, there is no connectivity. Network Manager still thinks its connected to WiFi, the signal bar shows zero bars, and no traffic makes it in or out. Restarting NetworkManager either results in things working again for a bit, or (more often than not, a kernel panic.)

The ArchWiki page suggests a few things for this issue, namely installing firmware-4.bin_WLAN.RM.2.0-00180-QCARMSWPZ-1 to firmware-4.bin. I'm convinced this actually results in no changes and that firmware-6.bin is used, as dmesg still reports

ath10k_pci 0000:3a:00.0: firmware ver WLAN.RM.4.4.1-00079-QCARMSWPZ-1 api 6 features wowlan,ignore-otp crc32 fd869beb

Despite changing firmware-4.bin, however when I change firmware-6.bin, it changes.

The Archwiki then goes onto say that it still crashes using firmware-4.bin_WLAN.RM.2.0-00180-QCARMSWPZ-1 (Like I say, I think that's because firmware-4.bin isn't used for this card) and instead suggests to use firmware-6.bin_WLAN.RM.4.4.1-00102-QCARMSWP-1 (but then strangely links to firmware-6.bin_RM.4.4.1.c1-00042-QCARMSWP-1), and then finally says if you have a newer BIOS, time to replace the WiFi card.

I have tried the latest versions, WLAN.RM.4.4.1-00110-QCARMSWP-1 and WLAN.RM.4.4.1-00119-QCARMSWP-1 neither of which resolve the issue.

I'm wondering if there's anything further I can do - where I might file a bug report so that it gets fixed properly, before giving up and purchasing a replacement WiFi card

Thanks smile

I had a similar issue with the same card, I haven't seen the error in the 4.18 kernel anymore though. FWIW since it seems to fail somewhere in the board.bin did you also update the board.bin ?

Re: [SOLVED] XPS 13 9360 8th Gen (QCA6174) Firmware crashes

I wasn't aware of board.bin at all, thanks for the heads up, throwing XPS 9360 board.bin ended up with me finding

https://github.com/marccarre/dell-xps-1 … /README.md

I'm going to do that, and I'll report back if it resolves the issue.

Edit: so far so good, I'll edit again after a few days of stability

Edit: 2 days later and still no drops. I'm calling it a win. Will mark as solved.

Re: [SOLVED] XPS 13 9360 8th Gen (QCA6174) Firmware crashes

Hi, I have been experiencing very similar issues with my Dell XPS 15 9560 (also has a QCA6174) and found this fix to also work.
(I also have a 9360, so will dig that out and try the same fix soon)

Strangely I've only seen one or two firmware crashes, but most often the failed to start hw scan:

Nov 11 21:45:33 fortier kernel: ath10k_pci 0000:02:00.0: failed to start hw scan: -11
Nov 11 21:45:33 fortier iwd[759]: Received error during CMD_TRIGGER_SCAN: Resource temporarily unavailable (11)
Nov 11 21:45:30 fortier NetworkManager[764]: <info> [1541972730.0883] device (wlp2s0): new IWD device state is disconnected
Nov 11 21:45:30 fortier kernel: IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlp2s0: link is not ready
Nov 11 21:45:30 fortier kernel: ath10k_pci 0000:02:00.0: failed to start hw scan: -11
Nov 11 21:45:30 fortier iwd[759]: Periodic scan could not be triggered: Resource temporarily unavailable (11)
Nov 11 21:45:26 fortier NetworkManager[764]: <info>  [1541972726.8885] device (wlp2s0): state change: failed -> disconnected (reason 'none', sys-iface-state: 'managed')
Nov 11 21:45:26 fortier NetworkManager[764]: <warn> [1541972726.8880] device (wlp2s0): Activation: failed for connection 'tus'
Nov 11 21:45:26 fortier kernel: ath10k_pci 0000:02:00.0: failed to start hw scan: -11

Thanks for the solution!
