Getting Syslinux UEFI/BIOS to boot on a macbookpro

I'm trying to build a liveUSB with persistence that needs to boot both on UEFI and BIOS. Currently I'm using a borrowed macbook and I'm doing most of my development on it (the "borrowed" part is important as I cannot make alterations to it). I do need it to boot both as I don't have my own hardware so I'm jumping between other people's computers, hence the live system with persistence.

So the problem is that every Syslinux setup I've tried fails to boot (including, I think, this one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=194877). It recognises the boot partition just fine, however when I try to boot it the system just hangs, no other indication that something is wrong other than simple unresponsiveness until I power it off.

I honestly don't understand why, nor do I know how to even begin to solve this.

The good part is that the official Arch installation media boots fine on the same mac. It also need to be Syslinux as I'm honestly not interested in dealing with Grub...

Any advice?
