What now? Do you try to reach a TTY or a desktop manager? Which one? Did you explicitly enable discrete GPU only or are you using hybrid mode? If the former and you are using GDM see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GD … rg_backend (you might want to do that anyway) if the latter read through the options outlined in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus and specifically if you intend to disable the nvidia card by default and only use it on demand see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

I use ly-giy (aur) as a display manager. I can't reach it or tty (disabled dm) with the dedicated graphics enabled in the bios.

The nvidia prop driver keels over when the TTY tries to enable modesetting, try loading nvidia-drm.modeset=1 on your kernel command line or a relevant entry in /etc/modprobe.d
Oh and if you now install the nvidia driver, ensure that you run a full system update as your kernel is outdated and it won't be able to load the current nvidia module.
If you have updated and your uname still outputs that, you must ensure that your /boot resp. UEFI partition is properly mounted and reinstall the linux package

And no, the above doesn't help^^

How could it have not helped if you were able to upgrade the system? Obviously you were able to get to a TTY or other interactive environment. Try uninstalling the nVidia proprietary drivers and install nouveau instead.

It's a thinkpad w530, it has both a quadro k1000m and intel hd 4000 that i can both enable separately in the bios. it does boot fine with the hd4000 but not on quadro k1000m with the nvidia driver. I have tried nouveau and it doesn't help the performance of that specific card.

One of these statements has to be false.
Be sure to read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _boot_into and post the complete journal of a "failed" boot.
If you can, get ssh access to the machine.

Sorry, I mixed desktop manager with display manager. And I'll post the failed boot when I get home.

Some laptops don't have direct output from NVIDIA cards. When I search for your's, its also having same setup. Correct me if im wrong. Display is physically connected to Intel GPU.
So my solution would be try hybrid graphics. Try configuring as per this wiki - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
I would also configure bumblebee - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bumblebee
Some extra reading - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/hybrid_graphics
Sometimes install all of these, enabling bumble bee, configuring with nvidia-xconfig, then removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, magically fixes these issues.
I hope I helped.
