What's the difference between vim and powerline-vim?

I installed powerline, just because it's more pleasant to look at. Im obviously missing the benefits though. And I also installed powerline-vim and reconfigured the .bashrc and .vimrc, but i dont understand what's supposed to be different.

Edit: Inline code doesn't seem to work here.

Is there a typo in the thread title?  If not, they are completely different: vim is a text editor, powerline-vim is a plugin for that editor.

This may be obvious to you, but it certainly isn't to us.  What benefits are you missing, and what makes it obvious?

You don't understand what is supposed to be different between what and what?

I assume there must be some pragmatic reason for having Powerline installed, rather than it just looks cool.

I didnt understand the difference between vim, and powerline vim. Now that i realize it's a plugin, i have a better understanding. I am still not certain what advantage having a powerline plugin for vim gives a user, rather than just a standard edition of vim.

Re: What's the difference between vim and powerline-vim?

For me, its a visual queue thing.... When my peripheral vision detects BLUE at the bottom I am reminded I am in Edit, when my peripheral sees RED I am reminded that I am in replace mode... etc. And this is why I still prefer vanilla powerline and do not match it to any color-scheme I might be using. But that's just me and what I get out of it... as I quickly fly thru a file and make changes... I have found these visual queues to be helpful.... it has reduced the number of :wq's randomly saved in a file I edit.

To be honest, I have little if any other use of the extra status line info it provides... but every now and again I appreciate it compared to a fresh standard install of vim with no status line setup ;-)

Why would you assume this?  There isn't.  It is just for visual effect/cosmetics.  You can customize your own status line in a variety of ways, powerline is just someone else's customization that you more or less copy-and-paste to get the look that they like.
