Hello,

I recently upgraded and rebooted and since then my xorg-server wouldnt start. "startx" results in the attached error.

I never had that issue in the past. I have pretty "standard" hardware, thinkpad notebook, few years old.
If I do "startx" without the config file at /etx/X11/xorg.conf I get the same result.

I killed xfwm4 plus some processes named "xfce4****".

After killing 'em all I was able to start xfce/i3/... as user and as root.

Now the question remains: why are xfwm4/xfce4** started before x-server? How can I find that out?

This all should be started via systemd service files I thought? But if I check "systemctl status xfce4*" I cant find anything? Are there other ways?

I found out that a vncsever is starting xfce. I commented out xfce in ~/.vnc/xstartup and xfce is not started automatically anymore. But still the vnc server is running and I have no idea why it is started automatically.

Solution:
I was able to identify how vnc was started. I had to add the user flag to the systemctl command to see its status: "systemctl --user status vncserver@:1". This way I was able to disable it. Thanks everybody.
