Setting Up Multihead With multiple GPU's properly

The situation & The goal

So I have been looking to get my three monitor setup to work properly, and I have run into a surprising amount of trouble.  I couldn't find anybody else with my specific set of problems, so I thought I would try my luck over here.

well, let's start with the most important part shall we?:

Ok. So I have three monitors, and two graphics cards  (yes, I use graphics card and gpu interchangibly, I know the difference, so please don't get into that). The internal (intel) graphics card, which controls my laptop screen (this monitor will from now on be referred to as eDP1) and my nvidia graphics card, which controls a big, nice old TV over hdmi (DP-1 from now on) and an old dinky 4:3 desktop screen I had lying about(DP-3).

The way it autoconfigures, Xorg puts eDP1 on display :0, and DP-1 & DP-3 on display :0.1. Which is fine in principle, but my wm (i3) can't handle that. I had a workaround for this, where upon startup i3 would check wether bumblebeed is stopped (thereby implying that the screens were connected) and then start an extra i3 session inside the other display. This kinda worked, except that focus was dodgy and i couldn't have firefox open in both sessions (+ some other stuff, point is, I would like to change it). So I decided to sacrifice this weekend to wrestling with X org to get both cards in a single display, I now I'm an tired and kinda sick of looking at my xorg.conf so I'm turning to you guys.

my xorg.conf right now:

What I have tried

Xinerama

Xinerama combines all monitors into a single screen (:0) making it possible to drag windows between screens.

Interesting, in my experience all Xinerama does is make your entire system crash. All bitterness aside though, form what I've seen there was a clear relation between me enabling Xinerama and lightdm not even being able to start. Instead all I got was a "_" in the top left corner of eDP1. Yes, also with force_xinerama yes in my i3config.
Screen      1  "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
Most of the sources I found said this line wasthe magic bullet, but for me it was already there by default.
dumb xorg.conf stuff that shouldn't even work
Setting multiple devices for the same screen(only took the last one in the file), Setting all the monitor entries for the same screen (there is nothing in the monitor subsection tying them to devices, so of course that doesn't work).
GPUDevice
Ok, here is where it gets interesting.

man xorg.conf wrote:

GPUDevice  "device-id"
This entry specifies the Device section to be used as a secondary  GPU  device
for  this screen.  When multiple graphics cards are present, this is what ties
a specific secondary card to a screen.

So based on this, hypothetically I should be able to use this option to select both gpu's. But interestingly it still only used the one specified device, while the other screen(s) didn't even get any signal. Now, to make it even more interesting looking at the X org logs with the different graphics cards chosen, if the nvidia card was chosen as main, the xorg logs happily reported that it had eDP1 was enabled and well, just handing me a small warning that it couldn't exactly find where it was in relation to unkown screen DP-1 but that didn't matter too much. Note, I was reading this log from DP-1 while eDP1 was showing me  a black screen, not to appear in xrandr, not to appear under any X org screen, just sitting there, off. Meanwhile, if the intel chip was chosen as primary, the problem seemed a slight bit more solvable, looking at the Xorg logs it seemed like a classic case of starting, something went wrong, exiting for nvidia. So I set out to solve those wrongs. One reinstall of the drivers later I had only one error yet to face: "[    22.576] (EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section." so I decided to not only have the reference to screen one in layouts commented out ( I had that already) but also the entire description as well. So I restarted X org. Looked at the logs. In disbelief I removed any old xorg.conf still hanging out in /etc/X11/, restarted xorg, looked at the logs, restarted my laptop, looked at the logs...

and well

yeah

Re: Setting Up Multihead With multiple GPU's properly

I have no idea if nvidia support it, but I would try to use the RandR 1.4 options

xrandr --listproviders / --setprovideroutputsource

| alias CUTF='LANG=en_XX.UTF-8@POSIX ' | alias ENGLISH='LANG=C.UTF-8 ' |

Re: Setting Up Multihead With multiple GPU's properly

Do this in the session KDE and/or Gnome: you can configure the multihead/multiseat here. Different monitores, copy, next to each other (where) etc.

I've got two monitors and made it look like one bog monitor.
