"freezing" after suspend i3

I have arch with i3 on a lenovo ideapad 320. Started having this issue last night after restoring from a backup....
I usually suspend my system with a script that suspends then displays i3 lock on boot up. After restoring, it worked fine for three or four times. Now whenever i wake suspend, it goes to i3 but only the mouse and keyboard works, the wm doesn't register key presses or mouse clicks. If i wake from suspend and have an open terminal i can type commands but they don't appear until i switch TTY and then back to i3, which is still "frozen". Type a few more commands and again they don't appear until I switch TTY and back. Likewise for changing window from tile to float. I've read a bunch  of posts about systemctl and freezing but my issue doesn't seem to be an full out freeze, so I haven't tried anything yet to fix the issue. Would appreciate any insight or maybe if anyone knows which direction to point me....
