When I run `showkey` pressing the `Fn` button in combination with some keyboard keys, one of three things can happen:
1) Some buttons will return a different keycode/scancode compared to what they normally return without `Fn` - these include both keys that have an indicated 'Fn' function on my keyboard (a little picture on the physical key) as well as some keys I was surprised about - for example `Enter` returns 96 with and 28 without `Fn`.
2) Most buttons return the same keycode with or without `Fn` - for example pressing "1" always returns 2
3) Some buttons don't return a keycode at all when combined with `Fn`. These include keys you'd maybe expect `F12`, but also some seemingly random ones like `b`. J ust to make sure, I double checked with `journalctl -f` but again, nothing happens. Needless to say, they work fine on their own.
My aim is to increase the functionality of some buttons and my questions are:
For buttons that work as described in 2) - is it possible to change their keycode/scancode (only) when combined with `Fn`?
For the case of 3) - is it possible to assign scancodes to buttons that don't have any?

Generally, the answer to your question is "no". The Fn key emulate additional keys (or the keypad) on some (most) laptops. It is directly handled by the firmware, the kernel has no access to it, it only sees the keycode as shown by showkey.
