Switching gdm to lightdm+lightdm-gtk-greeter boosted unity opengl fps

I've got a 1060/3GB, 1080p display, 3570k, 16GB.  While testing other DEs I noticed FPS in my current gaming fun, a unity opengl game (that launches itself with `-force-glcore`) seemed much smoother.  I'm back on GNOME now, personal preference, and thought maybe GDM keeping the second x server running for login management was distracting nvidia.  I don't know whether that's the explanation, but bouncing between lightdm + lightdm-gtk-greeter and gdm, game performance is very noticeably snappier with lightdm, I can run near-ultra render quality, at stable playable fps, where I couldn't before.

Maybe GDM has a bug and is doing something like refreshing its desktop contents on that other tty that it keeps open?

You should try to benchmark this to make sure it's real. Maybe just looking at what glxgears is printing in the terminal is good enough for this?
