hid_apple settings have no effect on Virtualbox guest

Hello,
I am running Archlinux as a Virtualbox guest on a MacBook Pro (the newer model with the awkward "control strip" gadget) and I would like to swap the Command and Option/Alt keys.

I have read the article on how to customize the Apple keyboard layout on  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Apple_Keyboard and now my /etc/modprobe.d/hid_apple.conf looks like the following:

options hid_apple fnmode=2
options hid_apple swap_opt_cmd=1
options hid_apple rightalt_as_rightctrl=1

I had to add a /etc/modules-load.d/hid_apple.conf entry to load the hid_apple module, but I can see that loaded. I can also confirm that the value of /sys/module/hid_apple/parameters/swap_opt_cmd is 1.

Nevertheless, my keys are not swapped. Alt/option and command still behave the same.

My Virtualbox Guest Additions are loaded.

Can anybody suggest what may be wrong in my setup? Shall I use an entirely different approach for a virtual machine?

Thank you,
Stefano
