I have tried debian out. But the fact that I am so much more familiar with the arch configuration methods meant that I could engage in tinkering under the hood a lot more easily, with arch.
Being able to feel good about the support available must be another factor. A lot of development is insprired by how developers have managed issues in other distros.
I have only briefly looked at gentoo 64; but that is an environment where you could expect to have a good vantage point, when you consider providing builds for the various distros.
Another factor, is the question of which distro is most advanced. Of course, you should check through the list of libraries you will be wanting to use and find out about the various 64bit availabilities.
This is not so much of a comprehensive answer, but it gives one take on the issues. Certainly, I use arch64, primarily, because it is the one I am most proficient at tinkering with.

My guess would be that you would find this the easier route, in any case.
64 bit distros are well beveloped but they remain tattered at the edges. Certainly, you have to do some head scratching if you want to achieve absolutely everything that you are used to in 32-bit-land; and then you have to be ready to use different apps, from what you are used to.
We are some ways off the completely painless transition

You will encounter problems with multimedia codecs with 64-bit distros. Almost all proprietary codecs don't yet work with 64-bit userland.
