Hi there! I've been installing packages with the following command:
pacman -SySince I've had some problems in the past using only -S. I've learned the hard way that I must not use that command without -u. However, I've been doing this for so long that downgrading each package individually is not an option. How am I supposed to fix that?
Also, when I try to upgrade (with pacman -Syu) I need to replace a lot of packages and remove conflicting packages:

Accepting pacman's default recommended action is intended to be safe. There are no guarantees but the default choice on replace/conflict is the one the package maintainer intended.

Thanks a lot.

That is a very long list of extremely old packages that have been dropped from our repos. As loqs said, these are all replacements that were supposed to have happened one by one over the past couple years, for people who used -Syu.

Note that regardless of whether you are installing new packages, you should be running "pacman -Syyu" at regular intervals. I mean, at least fortnightly; preferably once or twice per week.
The longer you leave it between upgrades, the more likely you will have breakage, and the more complicated it will be to fix any breakage.
This isn't a "set it and forget it" distro.

Not '-Syyu'. Just '-Syu'. The former is a waste of community resource. See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1823357 for a recent explanation about this.

Thanks, I guess things have changed over the last few years
It used to seem like the double-y was required to prevent some forms of breakage (I can't remember what now). I'll switch to "-Syu" from now on.

It is more than just a waste, it actually leaves you vulnerable to partial updates if you do it when switching mirrors, which includes if the first mirror times out and you end up using the second mirror on your mirrorlist. Again, explained in detail in the other thread.

Having read the other thread, I realise that as an oldish (and nowadays less community-involved) user I also had the same impression that -Syyu is useful when switching mirrors. Thankfully the number of instances of -Syy in the wiki are vanishingly small so this shouldn't be an issue with those who are more up to date.

I explicitly went through and deleted a bunch of them, but apparently was less thorough than I thought...
Also I haven't touched the non-English pages...
