Create bold and italic styles for incomplete fonts

I'd like to use the bold variant of an incomplete font (Monaco) with alacritty. Unlike urxvt and st, it does not create the missing variants. As a workaround I looked into this, and tried to manually create the bold and italic styles. However, I have two issues:

  1. /usr/share/fonts/fonts.cache-1 doesn't exist. I checked %cachedir%/*-%arch%.cache-%version% as marked in the manpage, but apparently it does not contain a file described in the wiki.

  2. Isn't this just a temporary solution, if every fc-cache overrides the created configuration?

Thanks for the help!
