[SOLVED] Desktop environment installation

hello,

I would like to know if it's possible to install the DE while running arch-chroot within the LIVE environment.
Or is it recommended to reboot to the newly installed system first before I install any DE?
If so can you tell me why this is?

Thx

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop environment installation

What would be the point of the chroot, if you couldn't even install a couple of files without rebooting into the main system?

What kind of black sorcery do you think a package manager does, above and beyond copying some files to the filesystem?

I thought stuff like f.e. systemd or so were not available...

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop environment installation

Why would systemd be needed just to install a package? I'm not saying you'd be able to launch the desktop from within the chroot...

Sorry my mistake, I meant systemctl, for example to enable a display manager service.

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop environment installation

if you just want to enable a service you can do it manually without using systemctl. Just create the relevant symlinks using ln.

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop environment installation

There's nothing to enable either. A DE is a program that you run, usually with the help of "sx" or "startx".

What you're thinking of is a DM: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Display_manager

A DM is a graphical program that you boot into, which lets you select a DE to log in to.

Re: [SOLVED] Desktop environment installation

Just performed a new installation, 'systemctl enable' worked during chroot.

Thx for all the answers.
