updated system and now it doesn't boot

I updated my system and now it wont boot.  I only see a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen.  I'm using systemd boot and this install is almost 2 years old and I've been using UEFI the entire time.

I booted into a Arch live usb system, then mounted my root and boot partitions and then arch-chroot.

I tried "bootctl update" but that failed on some bus error.

I tried "bootctl install" but that failed and said the two EFI files were read only which I thought was odd.

I ran "fsck.vfat -f  /dev/nvme0n1p1" and it seemed to fix some errors but the system still wouldn't boot.  Now that I type this, I realize I had the boot partition mounted at the time and maybe because of that fsck couldn't fix it?  I'll try running fsck on the unmounted partition and see what happens.

Anyway, does anyone else have any thoughts?  If necessary, I can just use mkfs to format the /boot partition and start over, right?

Thanks

Re: updated system and now it doesn't boot

What did the update contain? ( e.g. the contents of /var/log/pacman.log for that update)
What was the exact output of `bootctl install`?  Was /boot mounted read only when you tried that command?

Re: updated system and now it doesn't boot

I am at work now typing this stuff from memory, so I'll have to get exact outputs later, and check the pacman log as well.

As far as I know /boot should have been mounted rw.  My steps went like this:
booted to the live system
fdisk -l (to check which partition is what)
mount /dev/nvme0n1p3 /mnt
mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot
arch-chroot

thanks

Re: updated system and now it doesn't boot

And we're back!

I booted to the Arch usb again and ran fsck on the unmounted boot partition.  It didn't seem to do anything.  Then I mounted the partitions and chrooted again.  I ran "bootctl update" and it copied the 2 loader files and then said "not booted with EFI, skipping EFI variable setup."  I thought that was strange because it should have booted with EFI.  (I should probably disable the compatibility mode in the BIOS to force it to use UEFI)

Anyway, then I rebooted and this time Arch booted right up.

Since it was requested, here's the relevant portion of pacman.log

Thanks again
