Thinkpad Carbon X1 6th Gen + Dell WD15 Dock Monitor reconnect problem

Hi all,

I've just installed a clean Arch with i3 on it. As I've not based myself on an existing full desktop environment (I wanted to stay lean), I think I'm missing a couple of packages/drivers to correctly deal with my dock. I'm connecting external monitors (1 HDMI, 1 VGA) through my WD15 dock and the laptop's usb-c port. When booting, this works fine. All monitors are configured properly and work as expected. Unplugging the dock results in the monitors being 'disconnected'. However, when replugging, the monitors stay disconnected. I've tried debugging a lot:

- once in a while, the monitors are marked as 'connected' again, but they don't receive a signal (so they stay blank / unpowered)
- a single time (boot cycle), the dock worked as expected: replugging the dock resulted in expected behaviour
- i've tried using xf86-video-intel and without, this does not seem to make a difference
- i've tried using the HDMI port on the laptop itself, that seems to work as intended
- some usual suspects in the bios have been modified: thunderbolt assist mode DISABLED, wake by thunderbolt DISABLED, security level NO SECURITY, ...

Some output (with xf86-video-intel installed, on mesa drivers):

The dock (and connected devices) worked fine on my previous Latitude 5590. I tried booting in a fresh Manjaro install and that also seems to work as expected, so I'm suspecting a driver or package mismatch. However, I'm starting to get to the end of my knowledge here, and a search online does not seem to return a readily available answer. Does anyone have a clue on how to troubleshoot this further?

Re: Thinkpad Carbon X1 6th Gen + Dell WD15 Dock Monitor reconnect problem

All that's missing is an xrandr command to actually activate/configure those monitors.  You can easily do this manually (or with a script / alias).  If you want it to happen "automagically" (which I wouldn't) then you need some process listening for the relevant events.  Big DEs usually do this for you, but with just a WM you need to find a tool to do just this, or write your own.

Re: Thinkpad Carbon X1 6th Gen + Dell WD15 Dock Monitor reconnect problem

I'm aware of the need for a trigger for xrandr, I'm using autorandr for that. Maybe my logs were not completely descriptive, there are two scenarios after replugging:

1) the monitors are reported as disconnected (autorandr then errors when trying to bring them online, as xrandr does not detect them. manual xrandr attempts fail as well, as expected)
2) the monitors are reported as connected (autorandr feels fine, but the monitors remain dormant)

After installing a couple of packages (lib32-intel-dri, lib32-mesa, lib32-libgl, ...) that I noticed on my Manjaro installation which were lacking on my Arch installation, I'm getting the following feedback:

- xrandr reports the monitors as connected
- when trying to bring the monitor online, xrandr errors with `X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)` and arandr errors with `xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed`. I'm guessing this error was previously invisible, but now surfacing somehow. This bug seems to be related, as that user's experience mirrors my own: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1585884 .

I tried to get you some more information by supplying you with native xrandr output, which is actually getting me a bit closer to the problem:
After unplugging, I'm getting the expected result. Laptop monitor activates (autorandr selects the right profile), the rest is disconnected.

This was the error I was mentioning above, but while trying to give you some sane xrandr output by having a simple manual command...

 xrandr --output DP1-1 --mode 1920x1080

This is actually working: the DP1-1 monitor has now output, mirrored with my native eDP-1 display. The third one is black (expected, as it's not commanded to do anything).

However, now autorandr works as intended:

autorandr triple

I'm already happy that I'm getting as far as having no disconnected monitors after replugging (which was the case in the beginning, I guess the extra installed packages made a difference). Now, it seems that exactly the same xrandr command errors in one state, but not in the other.

Re: Thinkpad Carbon X1 6th Gen + Dell WD15 Dock Monitor reconnect problem

My appologies if I didn't read enough.  I was not aware that autorandr detected the connection of monitors (it's still not clear that it does after reading it's docs) - but the two cases listed above are clear problems regardless.  Even if nothing is triggering the randr change when connected to the dock, it should succeed when executed directly.
