[Solved] Thinkpad Carbon X1 6th Gen > pulseaudio jack = noise

I am completing a fresh install of Arch and am using Pulseaudio. Everything works fine out of the box, including detecting when a headset is plugged in the jack. I am using pavucontrol for easy configuration.

However, when using the jack, I'm noticing tiny stutters (gaps) in the audio stream once in a while. They're probably under 10ms, but still noticeable. I'm also noticing a background noise whenever there's no audio playing. Additionally, there's very noticeable noise (even when playing audio) whenever there's a cpu load present. This is especially the case when only one core is stressed (I tried this using `stress --cpu 1`), less so when all cores are.

I tried to fiddle with the buffer sizes of the pulseaudio daemon, which is the first thing I encountered as a solution (add tsched=0 in default.pa, default_fragment/default_fragment_size_msec in daemon.conf), but that didn't really make things better. Is there a proper way of diagnosing this? Or can this not be solved in any way through software and is it simply due to hardware issues? I found that the following is typically given in these situations, so I might as well paste that output here too:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh
bash alsa-info.sh --upload

Re: [Solved] Thinkpad Carbon X1 6th Gen > pulseaudio jack = noise

Noise with CPU load are usually caused by incorrect hardware shielding and are unlikely to be solvable in software (maybe a firware/BIOS/UEFI update), FWIW you might want to try and explicitly disable power_save_controller on snd_hda_intel and see if that helps, though I doubt it will.

that alsa-info.sh lacks a few outputs, you might want to install alsa-utils and repost at least the ones currently noted as 'command not found', you might also want to add

pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs #During active playback

Is the stutter reproducible with any audio source, or does playback program make a difference?

Re: [Solved] Thinkpad Carbon X1 6th Gen > pulseaudio jack = noise

I was guessing the noise was due to the hardware, I guess I'll find an external solution then. The skips however might be software related (I'm using mpsyt+mpv as my default player). On my previous laptop with similar setup I didn't notice any skipping (however small). I'm trying mpv with some high quality mp3 files now, and not noticing anything yet so far.

To be complete, the requested information:

Thanks for the black magic, qlem. Amazing to hear the static just disappear smile. I didn't have `hwC0D0` though, changed it to `hwC1D0`. Also have `hwC1D2` available but guessed that was another device.
