Zip - falling behind to windows?

Lately i had to decompress large zip file 2,5 Gig ,so i just unzip [file] but it failed!
I double checked if file wasnt corrupted ,but it was okay ,so i tried various options. When i was out of idea i tried to "repair" file with -FF option (single -F wasnt working) and i get output file cutted down to exactly 2 Gigs.
Good i backuped it...
So i went to the source of unzip package http://www.info-zip.org/ and i learned that on 32 -bit systems 2 Gig limit can happen   :?
I also found out that latest version was released 27 February 2005  yikes

Then in a despair i tried to check out windows archivers to uncompress this file (lol?) ,after many tries with wine i succeded using IZArc.

What's the point? We are falling behind to windows in terms of handling one of the most popular compression  :?

That's because zlib is a part of gzip.

There are other zip utilities if unzip is the one at fault.
