[SOLVED] kernel 4.19 and later: md127_raid5 blocked 10 min after start

Edit: Problem resolved with kernels 4.19.24-1-lts and 4.20.11-arch1.

Hello,

I'm experiencing a strange problem which started with the first upgrade to kernel 4.19 and maintains with the current kernel 4.20.3:

More or less exactly 10 minutes after reboot md127_raid5 is blocked. Following that, the databases and all processes using the raid disks get stalled and the system get's unusable. Here is the journal output after today's update to 4.20.3. Startup was finished at 13:36, problems start at 13:46.

The problem is present on 4.19 and 4.20 kernels. I had no chance to check 4.18 kernels after 4.18.16 and not all kernels of the 4.19 and 4.20 series, because this is a production system. Any help for the dissection of the problem is highly appreciated.

Some kind of deadlock in the kernel...? Not much you can do other than reporting a bug and hope it works in LTS (or other older) kernel until then.

From userspace view there seems nothing wrong with the RAID itself. It assembles fine. No weird stuff in dmesg until it gets hung up on what looks like ext4 filesystem/journal activity. Shouldn't happen...

Well, the md bitmap is one of the things that pops up in those trace logs, most likely unrelated but you could try mdadm --grow /dev/md127 --bitmap=none to get rid of it temporarily and see if it changes anything ( --bitmap=internal to add it back )

But the chance for that to be the culprit is very low... and without bitmap, if the machine subsequently crashes, you might be looking at a full resync as thanks for your trouble

Possibly probably the new scsi multi-queuing scheduler. Either disable it by appending to the boot line

scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=0 

or (without the above)

# echo none >  /sys/block/sdX/queue/scheduler

I have a similar issue with RAID1, which can take days to materialise before it cripples the machine with multiple processes in 'D' states for 5 or more minutes.

In which case one could try other schedulers, BFQ is most in line with what CFQ was in terms of scheduling and io priorities so that might be an option to test. Alternatively one would hope that if the issue is known that the devs are working on fixing the lock up with RAID and MQ which is why you should probably report this if there isn't a report yet somewhere.

Just tested with BFQ schedulers for all hdd's: unfortunately the raid5 got stuck again. Will check on the mainline kernel once the server is not required for productive work
