I recently switched to the proprietary nvidia driver and now have the following problem. I can successfully start X and the display manager, but after login in both monitors stay blank (one with a blue background, the other one with a black one). I can see the mouse pointer though and my desktop environment is running: for instance, I can open an xterm and execute commands, I just don't see anything. I noticed that, if I switch off one of my monitors in this state with "xrandr --output DP-6 --off", the other monitor gets reset, which fixes the issue. Then I can start the second monitor again and all is fine.
Any ideas of what might be going on? Is this a driver bug, or did I mess up the installation?
I run an up to date system. My card is
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP107GLM [Quadro P1000 Mobile] (rev a1)
The problem occurs both with lxdm and sddm. I can post both dmesg and Xorg.log if needed.

Move away that file, you're not supposed to use a static config anyway. If you want to impact some eg. nvidia specific settings, please use a configlet in xorg.conf.d, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Configuration

According to xrandr -q my monitors are called DP-0 and DP-6. Also my xorg.conf works in so far as the login screen of my display manager uses the correct layout. It's only after I log in that the display starts to act up.
I have tried changing the monitor names to DFP-0 and DFP-6, but that made no difference. I also tried it without my xorg.conf and the problem disappeared. So it seems to be a problem with my configuration. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The xorg.conf is attached.

Because the xorg.conf explicitly creates these outputs and adds them to xrandr. Doesn't mean they exist.
Did you change *all* occurrences of DP-* ? (Including the metamodes line)
Offline
Yes, I did change all occurrences.
xrandr -q lists my ports as DP-0 to DP-7, not DFP-0 to DFP-7. And my xorg.config does not mention those other DP-x.
PS: I forgot to mention: the metamode lines were created using by the nvidia-settings tool.

Even if you remove the xorg.conf?
Since you know your config causes this, try to dissect it by commenting some parts - I'd start w/ the monitor lines in the device section and the monitor and metamodes line in the screen section.
Offline
Yes, the monitor names are DP-x even without xorg.conf.
I have started dissecting my xorg.conf. The current working version is
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "DP-0"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "DP-6"
# Option "LeftOf" "DP-0"
# Option "Rotate" "left"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Nvidia"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "Monitor-DP-0" "DP-0"
Option "Monitor-DP-6" "DP-6"
Option "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
Option "DPI" "192 x 192"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Nvidia"
Monitor "DP-0"
Option "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
Option "DPI" "192 x 192"
Option "Stereo" "0"
Option "SLI" "Off"
Option "MultiGPU" "Off"
Option "BaseMosaic" "off"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "nvidia-auto-select"
EndSubSection
EndSectionThe problem starts as soon as I uncomment the lines
# Option "LeftOf" "DP-0"
# Option "Rotate" "left"in the definition of DP-6.
Any ideas?
Offline
No matter which of them?
Try kicking
Option "Monitor-DP-0" "DP-0"
Option "Monitor-DP-6" "DP-6"Those should not be required.
Offline
The problem seems to be the Rotate option.
A minimal config that exhibits the problem is
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "DP-0"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "DP-6"
Option "Rotate" "left"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Nvidia"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Nvidia"
Monitor "DP-0"
EndSectionIf I comment out the line Option "Rotate" "left" everything works.
Offline
Can you "xrandr --output DP-6 --rotate left"?
Offline
Yes.
Offline
After the update to nvidia 415.27 the problem disappeared. So it seems to have been a driver bug.
