Good news for linux users

DivX has now launched stage6, which allows you to upload and share videos just like youtube and google video. But what's in there for linux users?

It doesn't use flash! Instead it embeds videos in DivX format.

No more crashing, no more wine!

Do check out the site and post critiques

Re: Good news for linux users

No more crashing? I cannot count the number of times mplayer-plugin has caused firefox, and at times my system, to collapse.

Also, youtube works great. They don't use the latest flash version, and it uses flash in such a way it's acceptable.

If you don't like flash, use youtube-dl and mplayer or something instead :-p

Shouldn't this be in Linux Discussion or Off-Topic?

I'm sorry I didin't realize. Is there a way to move this thread?

BTW flash on youtube always caused my browser to freeze just when the video ends playing. Mplayer has given me no problems so far.

Re: Good news for linux users

I blocked all youtube content in my opera browser settings.  Never got it to work efficiently.

Re: Good news for linux users

... I don't really care because I neither use youtube nor stage6.

Youtube works great here, except that the sound is slower than the video. Oh, and sometimes it makes Epiphany crashes (dunno why).

Re: Good news for linux users

Flash is actually one of the reasons I like YouTube and Google. It works a heck of a lot better than mplayer-plugin ever will, I already have it installed for the other million websites that use flash, and YouTube streams very quickly.

Re: Good news for linux users

To me mplayerplug-in has always worked very well. It's not the best thing for viewing video inside the browser, but better it than nothing smile. Can't say the same about YouTube, sooo many crashes while I see videos on it. Google Video strangely doesn't crash so often so probably it's a YouTube implementation fault.
Therefore I voted yes

Anything is better than flash for me. My sound card just doesn't like flahs. Or it is the other way around.

Interesting.  Never has YouTube made Firefox crash, for me.  But stage6... just crashed Firefox.  Great.   roll

Re: Good news for linux users

Are you sure you've run "pacman -Syu" in the past year? I haven't had Flash crash Firefox for over a year, possibly two. I watch stuff on YouTube with Linux constantly. When I get bored that's the first place I go.

Re: Good news for linux users

I do 'pacman -Suy' every single day.  Also haven't had Flash cause a crash in ages.  As stated: "Never has YouTube made Firefox crash, for me."  But whatever they're using at stage6 did.

Re: Good news for linux users

I find flash only kills firefox if composite is enabled and XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS isn't set.

Re: Good news for linux users

I guess the discussion is over for now:

Sorry, but the DivX Web Player does not currently support Linux.
