xorg neomagic driver problem

For a seven years old IBM TP600e whith a Neomagic graphics card I have found, that every installation or  live system employing the xorg server produces jerkingly turning glxgears, whereas with Knoppix-4.0 or a mixed Debian system with xfree86-4.3.0 the wheels churn smoothly. I would very much like to have Arch as my working installation but haven't found a way yet to get the graphics card to work properly. I have recompiled and installed  the driver with ABS, I have copied and renamed old xfree86 neomagic drivers into xorg but all to no avail.
Is it possible to set up a current Arch with an vintage xfree86-4.3.0 server (as in Debian) and if so, where would I find a corresponding Arch package?
