[solved] makechrootpkg fails to create directory

There's already an old thread about this, which was allegedly solved.
However, with an up-to-date Arch Linux installation I still run into this issue with devtools-20180531-4:

 $ makechrootpkg -r /home/abs
==> Synchronizing chroot copy [/home/abs/root] -> [rne]...done
==> ERROR: Failed to create the directory $SRCDEST (/root/yay).
    Aborting...
==> ERROR: Could not download sources.

I followed this guide for setting up the chroot.
Any suggestions?
Solved:
You obviously cannot directly invoke makechrootpkg as root.
