I'll just get straight to the point:
The setup is a laptop with a GTX 1060, with HDMI out plugged into a monitor
On a previous install, x11, i3 + nvidia proprietary driver I was able to use alsamixer and/or pavucontrol to switch between HDMI audio output to a monitor
Recently I changed my setup to use wayland, sway (release 1.00) + nouveau drivers
I have audio output to the laptop speakers, but not through HDMI out. In pavucontrol, the HDMI audio option says "unplugged"
Debugging steps:
$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC255 Analog [ALC255 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0running speaker-test outputs no errors, but I don't hear sound through the monitor.
Selecting device 0,0 plays noise through the laptop's internal speakers, as expected
speaker-test -c 2 -D hw:1,3
speaker-test 1.1.8
Playback device is hw:1,3
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 524288
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
0 - Front Left
1 - Front RightI went through alsamixer, and tried toggling stuff that was muted as well.
Also tried messing around with pavucontrol
Also tried booting 4.19 LTS kernel (was using 4.20 earlier)
Also tried turning monitor off/on again with audio playing
(in previous cases, this fixed issues where audio was being output, but the monitor wasn't picking up the audio)

I'm out of ideas.. Has anyone else tried a similar setup?
