Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

Hello guys,

Unfortunately I am forced to run Arch in VirtualBox due to inability to get Arch working natively with FortiClient VPN (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=243423).

Now I have the problem that the the shared folders functionality does not work.

I have installed virtualbox-guest-utils, and set the following values in VirtualBox under "shared folders":

Name: work
Path: D:\work
Access: Full
Auto Mount: Yes
At: /work

I did some googling, and tried a few things, such as installing the package, "virtualbox-guest-modules-arch", but this made no difference.

I'm am really trying to use Arch Linux and trying to learn about Linux, obviously I don't know very much, so please be gentle and any help appreciated. If there is any further information you need, please let me know and I'll give you a log output or whatever.

Re: Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

Hello,

Do you have 'virtualbox-guest-modules-arch' installed? You'll need them for virtualbox guest features to function (virtualbox-guest-modules-arch should provide the kernel modules).

Regards

Re: Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

The Shared Folders in an Arch guest stopped working via Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager in Dec 2018, 6.0.0 release (if you are using 6, I don't know about other versions). Other ways to mount shares, try Samba, or if its folders you want to access persistently you can add them to fstab, Have you tried any of these from the Wiki?

Re: Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

@bugsmanagement : as per the OP, I did not have it installed at first, but I did install it after doing a few Google searches, and it made no difference.

@WFV: thankyou for the push in the right direction. I must admit, I didn't read through all of that considering it always "just worked" in the past.

It still doesn't work, but with a bit of fiddling around as described on that page, I have managed to mount the shared folders manually, which will do for now.

I don't know whether to mark this as "SOLVED" or not, because it's not really "solved", but this little work around will suffice for the moment.

Thanks for your help and thanks everyone else too.

Re: Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

Were there any error messages like this in the journal before making the changes?

Nov 11 05:45:00 vbox kernel: vboxsf: Old binary mount data not supported, remove obsolete mount.vboxsf and/or update your VBoxService.

Yes, actually I do get that error.

Do you know a way around it?

Sorry for the weird long time between replies, I just manually mounted when I needed and forgot about it. Now I'm experiencing the same problems again and found my old post through Google. Yes, I get that error.

That message is not related to the current issue with broken automounting. The current issue is https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/61307 .
There's a working fix available, now we're just waiting for the developer responsible for the virtualbox-guest-utils package to apply the fix.

Re: Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

Hi everybody,

Since virtualbox update from 6.0.8 to 6.0.10 (with virtualbox-host-dkms and virtualbox-guest-iso), I got systematically a BSOD in Win7pro guest when I click on shared folder in explorer (automatic mounting).
After downgrading, it's OK!

Waiting for next update, if I can help in between?

Re: Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

feNNec your issue shares the common feature of automatic mounting but that appears to be the only commonality as the original issue was present under earlier versions and on a different OS.

Re: Shared Folders don't work in VirtualBox Arch Linux

A workaround is to install the older 6.0.8 guest extensions on the guest. You can use the newer version for other VirtualBox packages on the host.
