Normalize output of video

I have a media server running vanilla arch. I have acquired a collection of music and movies from various sources, all of different formats. I was able to use wavegain, to normalize all the audio tracks. I am wondering however if there is a similar tool or method of normalizing all the audio in my videos (so I don't wake everyone in the next town over after watching a quiet movie)? Or if I am also to use wavegain to do this for the movies.

Note: The movies are of different formats (?) (you'll have to excuse my english it has severely degraded over the years)

Movie.mkv Matroska data <- (from file Movie not sure what is important, omitting filename)
Movie.m4v ISO Mediao, MP4 v2 [ISO 14496-14]
Movie.avi AVI. 640 x 480, 25.00 fps,...

Any help or hints are greatly appreciated!

Re: Normalize output of video

VLC is prefect, it has a lot of options including batch file convert, not sure but may you be able to use this option to normalize sound of your movies.

Re: Normalize output of video

I am currently using mpv as I have it connected to the tv and when I ssh i can just control it from my keyboard I had used vlc for awhile but I don't remember any functionality similar to mpv's command line interaction. Am I wrong in saying this?

Re: Normalize output of video

You can use libebur128 and pulseeffects to normalize to EBU R 128 at the Pulseaudio level. "Auto Gain" is the EBU filter in Pulseeffects...

no your right, vlc doesn't have a CLI, you can do that from its option in the menu. may our friends suggest for using pulseeffect is the best way.

Re: Normalize output of video

VLC has a curses interface.
See https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/2883 for a normalization request and some comments. Basically realtime normalization, let alone across multiple files, sucks.

Try eg

mpv --af lavfi='[alimiter=limit=0.1:level=disabled]' file.mp4

but the resulting audio will be inferior.

Re: Normalize output of video

Another PulseAudio compressor/normalizer you may want to check out: LADSPA swh-plugins.

Re: Normalize output of video

The only problem with the PulseAudio method is that it adds audio delay (121 ms in my PulseEffects setup), which can be quite distracting in videos if somebody is talking. Mplayer and mpv can compensate this audio delay of course, so this is mainly an issue with video playback in web browsers.

Re: Normalize output of video

I haven't noticed any audio delay with the LADSPA plugin while playing a video (no network, no browser).

Re: Normalize output of video

As for PulseEffects, I note that the latency value reported in the applications tab is much lower than what the title bar says, so now I am not sure which value is correct.

A YT latency test video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucZl6vQ_8Uo) does not look 100 ms out of sync to me, so maybe latency really is just a few ms as it says in the applications tab.

Re: Normalize output of video

Thanks for all the replies, I don't use it for any web browsing, so I thnk I will give the pulse audio solution a try and report back here when/if it fixes the problem smile

Edit: I will switch paths and attempt to use VLC and see if that is easier (I'm feeling particularly lazy hmm )

Edit 2: I did end up finding On-The-Fly Volume Normalize with MPlayer/ALSA and Maximize volume output with LADSPA

However it seems (from the second) the second being quite dated, ladspa-plugins is no longer in the pacman repositories would a solution like it still be viable? Or am would I be "stuck" with the first links solution

mplayer -af volnorm=2:0.75 Video.???
