No sound coming from internal or external microphone

I've had Arch installed for a while but the microphone has never really worked reliably. Over the past year or so it has worked a couple of times after an upgrade but then stopped working after another upgrade. So I'm finally trying to get it working once and for all. I have an Asus N550J with an internal microphone and an external one (that connects through a single port with the headphones). I can't pick up audio from either microphone, whether or not the external microphone is plugged in.
I'm using pulseaudio. I see a tiny amount of static from the external microphone and I can make pops if I wiggle the port a little (not a good idea I know). I don't see any static for the internal microphone. I've tried following various steps on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … leshooting
Here's output from a few audio commands:

Re: No sound coming from internal or external microphone

You need some software to test the microphone - you could try here

Re: No sound coming from internal or external microphone

I've been testing with both arecord and skype but neither are able to pick up sound.

Re: No sound coming from internal or external microphone

I've just tried running with the LTS kernel and that didn't help. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can debug this?

Re: No sound coming from internal or external microphone

The outputs you've posted are for debugging playback, not recording issues. During a recording attempt post

amixer -c1 #This 1 here is the card index of the correct card, given the earlier setup this should be 1, verify with aplay -l, you want to give outputs of the analog, not the HDMI card
