[SOLVED - xf86-video-intel driver bug] Applications freezing/crashing

In the last few days I have noticed a lot of crashing from applications. It seems I leave one window for a moment, come back to it a few seconds later and it is unresponsive. Some examples of how the freezes occur:
1. The tab switcher freezes on it and after a while XFCE says it's busy and is not responding (see image 2).
2. In the case of the kitty terminal emulator, the cursor appears as though it is not in focus (see image 1 below). When I try to close it with a keyboard shortcut it eventually shows the busy/not responding image (see image 2).

This occurs frequently for me in the below apps:
- trello
- kitty
- skypeforlinux

This occurs in all apps. Some like firefox just freeze without any error messages, others say they are not responding.

I have attempted to find logs but have not succeeded in finding any.

UPDATE: In the most recent batch of crashes, the windows are empty except for the title bar and all I can see in them is the desktop background.

UPDATE 2: It seems like it is only happening with GTK applications. I have deleted ~/.config/gtk* and .gtk* and restarted. It didn't seem to do anything.

Why is this an AUR issue? kitty was installed through pacman and this appears to be an issue with XFCE hiding.

Because two of the three packages you mentioned (and I assumed kitty was as well), are AUR packages.

It's not an AUR issue. It appears to be happening with all my applications now. Some just say not responding and others (like firefox just freeze altogether).

Paste your xorg.log and a journal excerpt covering the crash. Include details about your card, driver and any configs.

Re: [SOLVED - xf86-video-intel driver bug] Applications freezing/crashing

Update: It seems to only occur with GTK apps. I have deleted ~/.config/gtk* and ~/.gtk* and restarted but that didn't do anything.

Re: [SOLVED - xf86-video-intel driver bug] Applications freezing/crashing

kitty is a gtk client?

The titlebar is provided by the WM. What you see usually happes if the client is stalled and fails to draw on its window or if it dies right after mapping the window (and the WM doesn't cover map/unmap events in rapid succession)
I'd suggest to strace some problematic process to see where it's lingering around - if at all.

I thought it was but I just searched through its git repository for gtk and found some matches. I don't know how to properly tell.

I just ran strace and kept seeing the below errors. I'm not sure if I am doing it right though. A long list of things get displayed every time I switch windows or do things on any window.

This message showed up a lot running "strace trello" and "strace kitty". I haven't yet caught it freezing with strace.

recvmsg(18, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)
recvmsg(27, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)

EDIT: When I run "strace" on an application it doesn't ever freeze/crash. It also seems that when a window is actively doing things such as a terminal window running "sleep 99999", it doesn't freeze either.

Deleted. Thought it was a solution but it wasn't.

This also seems to be happening in other window managers such as openbox and icewm. It happens less often than it did before in DWM, but every so often applications freeze.

Re: [SOLVED - xf86-video-intel driver bug] Applications freezing/crashing

The symptoms have stopped after I fell back to the modeset graphics driver. I uninstalled xf86-video-intel and xf86-video-vesa.

I'm guessing there is a bug in the xf86-video-intel driver.
