[SOLVED] Laptop Screen and Nvidia HDMI - Black Screen when starting X

Hi all,

I have been meaning to post this for a while, since I haven't been able to find any information regarding this for a while now. Before describing the issue, I want to briefly describe my set up.

I am currently using an MSI Laptop, model GT72-6QD, set up with dual boot Windows 10 and Arch Linux. This laptop contains both an Intel Graphics Card and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M. To toggle between the two, there's a button below the power button to switch between the two. This button only works in Windows and requires a reboot, unlike other laptops that need the use of bumblebee to toggle between the two. This is not a problem for me though, since I rarely go on Windows to do some photography work, and spend most of my time on Arch doing vhdl programming and other type of development work, and the occasional steam game, so the NVIDIA card is always on. I have managed to get everything working on the i3 window manager with a 3 monitor set up via the HDMI port and a mini display port(including the laptop screen), and it's all been working flawlessly. Needless to say, this laptop has become the replacement to my old desktop.

The issue I'm currently having is that, whenever I boot the laptop and the HDMI cable is connected, the laptop screen remains off. Everything boots up normally, and I am able to see everything on the HDMI monitor, up to the login screen. After logging on, the HDMI screen goes black, right after X is started.

My current work around is to unplug the HDMI cable during boot and plug it back in only after seeing the MSI logo, shortly before reaching Grub.

Thing to note: the mini display port doesn't have this issue, and as soon as X is started, xrandr sets it to the right most position, as it normally should go. This requires no other configuration or it being unplugged, unlike the HDMI port. I need to either use arandr to manually set the HDMI as active and as the main screen, or run an xrandr command to allocate the displays accordingly.

I have tried setting up a xorg.conf file, but this really do anything. Only thing I noticed was that when starting X with the xorg.conf file(following the guidelines in the wiki), my conky and i3Blocks bar are rendered in a very small scale.

I've tried looking in the xorg logs, but there's no indication of the change of display names. There is also no indication of failure neither on dmesg or on the journal.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks

---EDIT: [SOLVED]
If anyone comes into trouble with a laptop having a similar issue, this was solved by re enabling fast boot on the bios and switching boot options back from UEFI with CSM /Legacy back to pure UEFI. This worked for me and I am now able to boot without any issues. It never occurred to me this would help, since most guides recommend turning off this boot. My boot times are also much faster - down to 15s from 28s checking with systemd-analyze.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop Screen and Nvidia HDMI - Black Screen when starting X

dgs - great post!

I just got an MSI S63 with Intel and GTX 1060 (last year's model). Got also the dual boot with W10 working but having issues with the second monitor. When I plug it in, the system seems to detect it but nothing happens. I will try the BIOS set up you inidicated an will update. But if you have any tips (as I am not yet where you are in the setup) it would greatly appreciated it.

Thx!
