[SOLVED] No longer able to automount usb hard drive

I've been using udevil to automount usb devices for several years. It works fine with, for instance, a card reader or a usb key.

However for a number of months it no longer works reliably with my external harddrive (WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB Portable External Hard Drive): when I plug it in, most often it does not show up with lsblk or fdisk -l; I need to unplug and replug it a number of times and eventually, if I'm lucky, it gets mounted. The hard drive passes smartctl test ("SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED").

Would anyone have suggestions as to where to look for an answer?

Re: [SOLVED] No longer able to automount usb hard drive

Check dmesg/journal for events that are happening.

FWIW

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

is an absolutely worthless descriptor, I've never seen that mention anything else, even for basically dead drives. Run a full long smart test, then look at the values reported by smartctl -a post them here if unsure on how to interpret.

Re: [SOLVED] No longer able to automount usb hard drive

Thank you. When I plug in the hdd unsuccessfully, nothing new appears in dmesg or journalctl.

Here the output from the smartctl long test, I assume "Extended offline Completed without error" is significant?

Re: [SOLVED] No longer able to automount usb hard drive

The drive looks ok.

I understand other devices do still show up reliably on the very same slot you try the HDD on?
Did you try a different USB cable?
Does the drive spin up when you plug it? (You should be able to hear or feel that)

Re: [SOLVED] No longer able to automount usb hard drive

Other devices do show up reliably from the same usb slots; even when plugged in unsuccessfully, the light on the drive enclosure always turns on.

But trying a new cable does seem to correct the problem... I should have thought of that.

Thank you!
