[workaround] Gnome on-screen keyboard not working

Yesterday I started using Gnome's on-screen keyboard for the first time with my new HP Envy x360.
However the on-screen keyboard only appears when I use text fields in three conditions:
1) login screen
2) Run application (Alt+F2)
3) Gnome Activities menu (Button "Activities" or "super" (=Windows) key)
On all other applications, including "native" Gnome apps like gedit, evolution and epiphany and third-party programs like MuseScore, Firefox and Chromium, the keyboard won't show up.
I also tried to manually enable it via Gnome's settings.
I have also tried "onboard", which works, but I'd prefer to use Gnome's integrated keyboard if possible.
Any hints on how to start debugging this are welcome.
Update:
When using a Wayland instead of an Xorg session, the on-screen keyboard also works in Gedit but not in any other of the mentioned programs.
Workaround
So, after a bit more Google-Fu I found this.
Swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen will activate the gnome on-screen keyboard.
