VMware and Accelerated 3D

How to enable accelerated 3D in VMware: http://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/w … ng_vm.html
Out of curiousity, what are peoples experience with this?
Just now, I can successfully run dxdiag Direct3D test, but I can't get Decent Freespace to use it (virtual machine crashes).  Grr....

Re: VMware and Accelerated 3D

I have used that for some time now to play Civilization 3 , a DirectX 8 game in a vm without problems (although the graphics are noticeably slow on resolutions above 800x600).

a few things to check :

- your host videodriver must support 3D acceleration.
This seems to limit the options to nvidia and ati using the nvdia/gflrx drivers.

- The wmware implementation works ok with apps that use DirectX 8, but NOT with directX 9 apps.

- 3D acceleration in a vm only works under w2k or wxp. problems with older apps may have to do  with the app running under a newer OS and not with the vm.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: VMware and Accelerated 3D

I was actually trying Decent Freespace, which uses DirectX 5.0, and also works fine under winxp.  The winxp installation has dx8 installed anyway, so dx9 wouldn't work whether it is under vmware or not wink

I realise that fs2_open and fsport gives you Decent Freespace natively, but I miss the vids, and I've only had the CVS compile nicely once...
