Ouch--update breaks Ubuntu systems

I suppose this isn't really newsy to this group.  It is to me, since my wife runs an Ubuntu system.  At any rate, the Ubuntu devs released an update the other day that evidently broke their system.  Oopsy.  Guess that having all that money to pay devs doesn't always prevent mistakes.  At least I presume the devs are paid.  Here's an article:

They fixed it in something like 6 hours though.

Yes, that's true and they should get a lot of credit for that...

It happened to break when all the developers were together at a conference.

Just for the record, we've had arch updates break systems too. ;-)  The philosophy is "that's what you get for bleeding edge"!

Re: Ouch--update breaks Ubuntu systems

I think Ubuntu has to be a bit more cautious though. Archers are generally more adept at recovering from such a blunder. I think there was a sizable crowd of Ubuntu users who suddenly went white upon seeing their as-easy-as-Windows OS suddenly go tits-up.

I've broken things too.

It results in learning, and it not happening again tongue

They seemed sufficiently contrite about the incident.
And the right attitude I think...less blame and more QA.

Kinda makes Pat V. look pretty good after all these years though.

Yes, but at least you aren't gentoo, waiting 7 hours for the latest xorg and 9 more hours for the latest KDE to compile just to watch it all break when its done is an excruciating experience to say the least!
