HP laserject pro MFP M177fw scanner problem

This used to work fine, but...

I sometimes work in a workshop that has an MFP M177fw multi-function device. When I first started I configured the printer using hplip. Don't use it often, and use the scanner even less frequently. A couple of days ago, I was there and needed to scan a document. At which point I found that the scanner had stopped working. Printing is still fine, but there is no response to any attempt to use the scanner. simple scan can see the scanner, but won't allow it to be selected - it always attempts to use my Brother scanner (which is quite a long way away at this point...).

Running from the command line, I get this:

So the HP scanner can be seen. But, if I attempt to scan anything, I get this...

scanimage: open of device brother4:net1;dev0 failed: Invalid argument

Which is fair enough - the Brother is in my local network, not here... Trying again with the device specified gets me this:

scanimage: open of device hpaio:/net/hp_color_laserjet_pro_mfp_m177fw failed: Error during device I/O

When first configured the printer months ago, it worked without any problems, so I was left wondering what had broken. In an attempt to narrow down the problem, I've tried two older versions of hplip and I've also tried downgrading sane to the -1 build of 1.0.27. No change.

I've also checked with the guy who set the workshop up. He uses Manjaro rather than real Arch, but is getting exactly the same results - it used to work but no longer does. On his normal desktop machine, I was able to try both wifi and USB connections.

I've been able to prove that it isn't a hardware problem - I have a copy of Debian stretch installedd on my laptop. If I run simple scan or Xsane from Debian, I'm able to use the scanner without problems.

Has anyone else seen problems with HP scanners in recent months? Any ideas as to how I track the problem down?
