Running Arch via VMWare

I have a friend who is trying to get Arch running in a VMWare install he has.  Ubuntu works fine but we can't get X11 running in Arch.  We've installed about every relevant xorg and xf86 file we can think of, but perhaps we've missed a package or have something set wrong in xorg.conf?

We've tried the video device as both vesa and vmware but no luck.  X looks like it wants to start but then crashes.  Same thing happens regardless of screen depth or resolution (tried 1024 800 & 640).

We generated the initial xorg via hwd and one thing we notice is that we get an (EE) for the glxmodule not being loaded so we comment it out.  Afterwards we still get the same crash but no (EE)'s and only a warning about some keyboard PC105 settings.

Any ideas on how to proceed?
