I'm complete newbie to arch and I'm having a really hard time with dotfiles.
I'm specifically trying to install this setup https://gitlab.com/BVollmerhaus/dotfiles
But I'm too much of a brainlet to make it work.
I've installed all required software and ran the ./install but it gives me "Some links were not successfully set up".
I've already done some research on dotfiles. What I have understood is that they are basically config files for installed software but I have a hard time wrapping my head around the installation process.
I've managed to install KDE but uninstalled it because my turbo autism requires a minimal install. I haven't slept, please send help.

If you don't understand them then don't use someone else's dotfiles.
Start with something simple and edit the config yourself by reading the manuals and help files.

I agree with you but I would like to have a nice looking setup from the start and learn from there, isn't that possible?

everyone has different opinions about what looks good or is ugly.
Maybe focus on the functionality you want and worry about "nice looking" later ?
Check https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Window_manager and consider which of those will suit your workflow best.
Try them out.
Once you found one that agrees with you, investigate how you can customize them to look better.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?

I've already investigated window managers and I find tiling window managers to suit me the most. In addition I find the gaps of i3-gaps very elegant that's why I settled on it and installed it.
The next logical step for me would be to rice it. I've read the wiki concerning dotfiles as well as other resources but naturally diving into it would help me the most to learn it.
Following the Arch wiki I looked into the User repositories to find rices already made containing i3-gaps and chose https://gitlab.com/BVollmerhaus/dotfiles
I followed the steps explained in the readme but I encountered some issues that I can't seem to resolve and that is why I asked in this forum.

Perhaps then try a middle ground. If you want that look/functionality but are new to implementing the features of i3-gaps and other software, take the code from that repo and start with one of the dotfiles, write it yourself using that template as a guide, while reading the manuals/wiki as you go when you encounter things you're unsure about.

In arch, no.
In many of the various arch-based distros or spin-offs, maybe. But those are not supported here for the primary reason that - by definition - the users of those systems have no idea how they are configured.
By using someone elses "dot files" - and especially by using their mysterious "install" script - you are essentially turning your base arch install into someone else's spin-off. You will not understand how it is configured. This cannot in practice and should not in principle be supported on these forums.

Thanks, for the explanation.
could you post the command you're stuck with and its full output ?
N.B. since you're using someone elses dotfiles, I'd recommend using a fresh testuser .
Other posters have said it better then I did.

I thought I could just install it all and make changes from there but now now I feel like I'd have to do it as you said. Yes it's more tedious but I will learn more.

When I installed KDE on Arch it was pretty much directly riced. I thought I could have the same result using only a WM and someone else's dotfiles. Aren't dotfiles supposed to do exactly that?

The first thiing to learn is to not randomly prepend `sudo` to commands.

I tried doing that because I thought it could be an access issue.
As I said I'm a new user. I'm coming from Linux mint but I made the switch to Arch for the aur/yay, further ricing and minimal setup.

And that's a very bad reason to use `sudo`. If something fails, don't just try to push harder - this will result in a completely broken system.
To run arch safely, you must understand what you are doing before you do it. You don't need to be an expert coming in, you can learn along the way - but you must learn then implement, not the other way around. If you do not understand what you are doing and are not patient enough to wait until you do, then arch linux is a very poor choice of distro.

Duly noted.

Now I understand it's not an elevation issue.
I've already looked through the files here to the best of my ability but I have little knowledge of python or any language for that matter.

To find any files not owned by the user in $HOME as a result of sudo
find $HOME ! -uid `id -u` ! -gid `id -g`I would not recommend using any AUR helper until you can access AUR and resolve PKGBUILD isssues using only makepkg and git/curl.
Edit:
~/.config/i3/config already exists but is a regular file or directoryThe ./install / dotbot / config can not handle the existence of /.config/i3/config it appears to have only been tested on a user with an empty ./config

Thank you very much, I have deleted existing instances of those files, rerun ./install and now it installed correctly!

Thats Great, i dont mean to be pedantic only those boys have been in the trenches for some time, it would be folly not to take heed.

Don't worry I feel you there must a lot of new users unwilling to follow advice. I have now completely setup my system on my own from the ground up and I really feel like I have a much deeper understanding of what I'm doing, I'm grateful I got advised early on! If I had used a ready-made rice following a copy-paste tutorial I would have missed a lot.
