I ran pacman -Syu on a system that hadn't been updated in quite a while (I had a hard drive fail and was booting up/updating an old machine). But now, when I try to boot, the machine hangs on a black screen with nothing but a slowly blinking cursor before GDM starts up.
When I try to xinit or startx from a live CD, I get
(process:12): WARNING **: 23:45:06:695: Could not make bus activated clients aware of XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP-GNOME environment variable: Could not connect: No such file or directoryand then the X server shuts down.
Journalctl doesn't show much alarming (grepping for "No such file or directory" gives me the same log or something before the reboot). The best error I can find is
gnome-shell[644]: Failed to create backend: The native backend requires stage views
gdm[574]: Child process -628 was already dead.(this obviously isn't the full log; I'm transcribing as I haven't had a chance to upload the logs onto anywhere where I can copypaste).
SOLVED: the issue was nvidia, approach detailed here worked
